Evolving methods in genetic epidemiology. III. Gene-environment interaction in epidemiologic research.

چکیده
Genetic epidemiology is increasingly focused on the study of common diseases with both genetic and environmental determinants. The concept of geneenvironment interaction is becoming a central theme in epidemiologic studies that assess causes of human disease in populations (1). Advances in genetic technology and the work of the Human Genome Project will make it easier for the study of gene-environment interaction to become an integral part of epidemiologic research. In this presentation, we will review the epidemiologic concepts and definitions applied to die study of gene-environment interaction in epidemiologic research and give an overview of both the traditional and emerging approaches to such research.

Commentary: epidemiology and the continuum from genetic research to genetic testing.
In January 2001, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health convened an expert panel to develop recommendations for evaluating and synthesizing data from epidemiologic studies of the human genome. Experts in medicine, genetics, epidemiology, statistics, laboratory sciences, prevention effectiveness, and the social sciences discussed examples drawn from ...

The recent success of genome-wide association studies in finding susceptibility genes for many common diseases presents tremendous opportunities for epidemiologic studies of environmental risk factors. Analysis of gene-environment interactions, included in only a small fraction of epidemiologic studies until now, will begin to accelerate as investigators integrate analyses of genome-wide variat...
متن کاملA Comparison of Case-Control and Case-Only Designs to Investigate Gene-Environment Interactions Using Breast Cancer Data
Background: The traditional methods of studying the gene-environment interactions need a control group. However, the selection of an appropriate control group has been associated with problems. Therefore, new methods, such as case-only design, have been created to study such interactions. The objective of this study was to compare the case-only and case-control designs using data from patients ...
